"Eat Your Soup," mixed media animation, 2019
My undergraduate thesis animation, entitled, "Eat Your Soup" was inspired by my childhood experience of visiting my grandparents house. They were both holocaust survivors who grew up in Eastern Europe and endured unimaginable trauma before moving to the US and essentially starting over to lead normal lives.
I wanted to explore and convey the feelings I had as a child that I did not understand at the time; going to visit them was like stepping into a different world. I could feel the residual trauma and was exposed to discussions of genocide at a young age. It is a complicated feeling of love mixed with discomfort and confusion.
This experience is tied to many distinct visual markers, from color palette to patterns and furniture styles . In order to convey the specific experience and emotions to my audience, everything that appears in this animation was carefully designed, considered, and placed in this piece by me.
